‘Enhancing trust and social dialogue to sustain recovery and structural change’ was at the centre of discussions at the Social Summit that took place on 17 October in Brussels.
This tripartite social summit for growth and employment was attended by representatives of the social partners who met with, among others, Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council, José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, and Deputy Prime Minister Waldemar Pawlak for the Polish Presidency of the Council.
Following the meeting Herman Van Rompuy declared: „Social dialogue at European and national level is even more essential in times of crisis when tensions naturally arise. Our model is based on consultation and as great a consensus as possible. Guaranteeing the financial stability of the euro area is the most important contribution that can be made for ensuring economic growth and employment”.

„The message that we received from both the business side and the trade union side is to do whatever is necessary to protect the financial stability of the euro zone, to restore confidence in the euro zone and in the European Union”, said José Manuel Barroso.
The Tripartite Social Summit meets twice a year, ahead of the spring and autumn European Councils. It is an opportunity for an exchange of views between the social partners, the EU institutions and the heads of government and employment ministers of the trio, that is the current and the two subsequent Council Presidencies.
